cannot access any administrator components such as articles, modules

As above, just recieve white screen. front end is fine.
but can access global config and additional components

Any ideas how to troubleshoot? putting in error reporting dev or maximum does not show any error messages.

Only thing in error logs for the website and I'm not sure it's relevant is:

No, it's the administrator backend, not the front end and only once clicking on things like users, articles, modules and plugins. components are fine as are global configuration etc.

Do you use the newest version of joomla ?
Please disable some extensions which you install to check out as if there was any conflict there.
